چکیده

Risk based inspection (RBI) planning for engineering systems is considered. Due to difficulties in formulating computationally tractable approaches for RBI for systems, most procedures hitherto have focused exclusively on individual components or have considered system effects in a very simplified manner only. Several studies have pointed to the importance of taking systems effect into account in inspection planning. Especially for large engineering systems it is not possible to identify cost optimal solutions if the various types of functional and statistical dependencies in the systems are not explicitly addressed. Based on new developments in RBI for individual components, the present paper presents an integral approach for the consideration of entire systems in inspection planning. The various aspects of dependencies in the systems are presented and discussed, followed by an introduction to the decision problems encountered in inspection and maintenance planning of structural systems. It is then shown how these decision problems can be consistently represented by decision theoretical models. The presentation of a practical procedure for the inspection planning for steel structures subject to fatigue concludes the paper. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Benefits of Risk Based Inspection Planning for Offshore Structures

The economical benefits of applying risk-based inspection planning (RBI) for offshore structures subject to fatigue are evaluated based on experiences from past industrial projects. To this end, the factors influencing the cost of inspection, repair and failure of structures are discussed and realistic values of these costs are presented. These are then applied to assess the expected costs from...

Integrated Inspection Planning and Preventive Maintenance for a Markov Deteriorating System Under Scenario-based Demand Uncertainty

In this paper, a single-product, single-machine system under Markovian deterioration of machine condition and demand uncertainty is studied.  The objective is to find the optimal intervals for inspection and preventive maintenance activities in a condition-based maintenance planning with discrete monitoring framework. At first, a stochastic dynamic programming model whose state variable is the ...

An Extended Methodology for Risk Based Inspection Planning

Inspection planning is an important activity in process industries, and one of the key tools used for such planning is the risk based inspection (RBI) methodology. The RBI is commonly used in planning of inspections for static mechanical equipment, in particular piping networks. The inspections are prioritized based on risk, expressed as expected values, integrating the likelihood and consequen...

Safety and inspection planning of older installations

A basic assumption often made in risk/reliability based inspection planning is that a Bayesian approach can be used. This implies that probabilities of failure can be updated in a consistent way when new information (from inspections and repairs) becomes available. The Bayesian approach and a no-crack detection assumption implies that the inspection time intervals usually become longer and long...
